The new owner of this elegant and stately Craftsman home on a prominent corner lot in the Rose City Park neighborhood of Northeast Portland was looking to elevate a landscape that had been untended for many years.
The Pistils team began by re-designing the front entryway to better match the distinctive character of the home, and then enhancing the street presence with a series of grounding, sand-finish concrete retaining walls, stairs and walkways.
A custom cedar-and-steel welded wire trellis fence and gate creates a mid-tier area of architectural interest that is surrounded on all sides by lush plantings.
Crushed basalt gravel paths with steel edging wind from the front yard around the south side of the property, resolving at a custom cedar deck and adjacent rain garden to manage storm water, with colorful plantings on all sides, including specimens like Sedum, ornamental grasses, coneflower and Hydrangea.
Per the request of the client, an emphasis was placed on a selection of hardy plants that thrive in the Pacific Northwest, including an array of natives, to reduce water dependency and eliminate the need for lawn.
A rustic bluestone paver patio was built alongside the rain-garden to create a cozy outdoor room for gathering and relaxing.
The collective result was a massive upgrade that greatly transformed the grounds of this high-profile landscape in Northeast Portland.
