Tucked away in the bucolic Forest Highlands neighborhood of Lake Oswego, the landscape of this residence features a series of interconnected and intimate outdoor spaces that synthesize form and function and the natural transitions in-between, with many Mediterranean garden accents.
A tall, columnar Carpinus tree hedge along the rear property line creates an immediate sense of privacy and enclosure to allow for a collection of highly functional rooms across the length of this relatively shallow backyard.
On one end, a roomy, timber-framed dining pavilion with a large poured concrete food-prep counter, pizza oven and firewood storage, creates a dynamic visual extension of the house architecture. Behind the pavilion is a comfy steel fire pit area with a custom Ipe wood bench, backed by a modern steel trellis with a fragrant Jasmine vine.
At the other end of the backyard, a hot tub area adjacent the master bedroom is enclosed by an elegant, horizontally slatted Ipe wood privacy screen, lush evergreen hedge and woodland plantings, including Vine Maple trees.
In between is an expansive, dog- and kid-friendly lawn for various forms of recreation.
Connecting all of the backyard spaces underfoot is a series of rustic, tawny colored “Tuscan” paver paths and patios, with a “secret” bocce ball court, set with decomposed granite, tucked along the east side of the house.
Summer-blooming Hydrangeas, Allium, Astilbe and Anenome augment the many evergreen plant textures to create a lush counterpoint to all of the hardscape elements.
